I started playing drums in the past 2 years (after playing guitar and bass for 15 years) because I had always wanted to play the drums and finally said, “That’s it! I am playing!”
I met with a lot of success early on. I started taking lessons right away with a couple of different teachers and sort of hit a brick wall fast!
Last week, I received the “Language of Drumming” DVD and NOTHING has changed my idea of music, drumming, practicing and loving music as much as this DVD has.
I’m so desperate for the DVD, but because i’m living in Malaysia, there aren’t any music stores that actually do sell drum dvds, so i’m having a hard time to get a hold of it. I’m with Christofunk on this one. WHEN ARE YOU COMING TO MALAYSIA?!? haha
Well it’s a small country and most people don’t know where on earth it is, but I do hope you come someday (soon!). All the best this year and keep on groovin’.
Greetings from the US! I have been working through many of the concepts in the DVD and am loving it! I have even been introducing some of it to my students and they are blown away with some of the “simple” clapping exercises that we turn into some badass grooves! Thank you, thank you, thank you for getting this info to us in such a brilliant manner. Keep up the amazing drumming! Also, when are you coming to America??? We need you to clinic us up!!!
Take care,
Christofunk
Again nothing new to add except to say I probably got the first DVD in Ireland and its just absolutely brilliant. First DVD I’ve seen as well that seems truly personal to the person watching. Fantastisch, wunderbar, geil, etc, etc. 10/10.
Hello Benny! Just got through watching your DVD. Wonderful, fresh, FULL of really practical and honest information/ observations. Thanks for making it! It will definitely breathe new life into my practice routine. Be well, Pie.
Saw your fantastic clinic in Lower Hutt, and purchased the DVD on the night – cheers for signing it! It’s been a superb help for me; I just started drumming seriously last year and so far it’s been the most informative and easy to follow self-teaching guide I’ve used. Glad to hear you enjoyed New Zealand – come back any time :) – keep up the phenomenal playing mate.
I received your DVD today and I’d like to say that it truly is unique and absolutely inspirational. Thank you for all of your hard work and fantastic playing. I just can’t say enough good things about what you do.
Hi Benny!
I´m not going to tell you anything new…yor DVD is really amazing! I usually find instructional DVD´s boring and non-practical (just a few esceptions, like the Jo Jo Mayer and Todd Sucherman´s ones), but yours is really funny to see, even for non-drummers as my brother. That´s a real achievement! I´m practicing to your lessons from the very beginning (now I spend my day saying “chid…chid…”, hehe!), and find it very interesting and useful. And one more thing: i like cinema a lot, and your DVD is really well filmed and thought, it´s a real pleasure to see different stage, settings and places while watching you playing. Thank you very much for this incredible gift.
…It´s not necessary to say that here you have your Spanish friend forever, in case that you need one. One never knows…
Yours,
David.
Hi Benny,
your dvd is very inspirational and I use as a big part of my teaching method now. I owe many thanks. In the word section of the DVD I loved the sound of the first kit that you used. It’s a SQ2 kit, right? I was also wondering the sizes and the tuning techniques and tricks you used for it.
Hope to hear from you soon,
Thanks!
Liam
Hey Benny,
We just wanted to tell you that we love your new DVD. It is the most innovative and inspiring instructional drum DVD we have seen in a long time. Keep up the great work and if your ever in Tampa Florida stop by and see us. Your friends at All Pro Percussion.

Hi Benny,
what a great DVD.As a teacher it has become part of my teaching tools, your explanations are easy to understand your playing is masterful you are a very gifted player. Many thanks for the inspiration.
Mike.
Hey Benny,
Saw your clinic in Christchurch, NZ, on Friday, and been watching/practising to your dvd the last couple nights, and can I just say, freakin’ brilliant. I always thought of rudiments in terms of single strokes, doubles, etc, and just mixing them up, but your system is so much more comprehensive and in one exercise makes sure you’re practising all the possible rhythms.
And the ghost note, bass drum, hi hat versions, why did I not think of that! I’m sure Gary Chesters book will be easy after this. Maybe.
And the odd times thing! I’ve been playing 3′s over 4/4 time for years but in 2 minutes you taught me how to do the 5 and 7 versions as well!! And mix them all together!! I even started doing “Listen to the University” to play with some 9′s as well. LOVE it. Where’s a prog band at.
Anyway, enough rambling, you play brilliant, you’re brilliant at explainging things, and your unique nips of humour makes your teaching style hugely effective, so glad I bought the dvd.
Many thanks,
Dene
Kia Ora Benny!
Once again a heartfelt thanks for the clinic in Lower Hutt. I’m hard at work on the material in the DVD, which is really helpful. I really enjoy your concept and desire for creativity to drive the music. If you ever need a hiking buddy next time you’re here, gimme a yell!
Cheers brotha! All the best on your upcoming tour!
Peace. Tom.
Benny, caught your show in christchurch last night and i really enjoyed it. i have been playing drums for 10 years now and am currently studying at the jazz school here in christchurch and have to thank you for some good tips and tricks ive picked up from your playing.
Hi Benny, just wanted to thank you for coming to New Zealand and remotivating all the drummers fortunate enough to see your clinic. Bought a set of your trash hats and will definatly be trying to track a copy of your brass band cd, thanks again bro.
Hi Benny
Thanks for the awesome drum clinic last night in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. Thanks to The Rockshop & your endoresees for bringing you here again and also for your partner for allowing you to break away from tramping around New Zealand to teach us about drumming. You are a great drummer, yet so humble and very funny / entertaining…”I found my way to the train station” Thanks Heaps, mate. EnverNZ
KIA ORA BG! You r one of the most exiting drummer’s i’ve seen in a long time. very very quick, but with tasts (TASTYSTING)i thought you were going to start to lift off the stage. it was just a blessing and i enjoyed it. Your DVD..One word..Excellento…my friend, its worth the money.
God bless and Viel Glück!
MINH (Petone, Newzealand)
Heya Benny,
Loooved your Napier Drum clinic im not even a drummer. However i do create music using my voice, bass, guitar, various hand drums, and other percussive instruments (including the kitchen sink). Im sure u have enjoyed the sound of a good stainless steel sink or tub, if not maybe you should ha ha. I digress, i wanted to ask you a question that came to mind after the clinic as i pondered the inspiring evenings information. It may or may not sound odd to you but, when you play drums, where do you feel it in your body? ( aside from the obvious physiological sensations you feel in muscles etc) and do see music (in your minds eye)? The thought train that lead to this question started with the comment that you feel you NEED to play drums. Your passion for your craft truly is inspiring and i loved the way you were both serious and silly ha ha well done.
hallo benny
Hey Benny,
I saw your gig in Napier,New Zealand it was awesome got no words to describe it,I’ve been playing drums for 5 years this is my sixth year with Chuck and i am 13 turning 14 on March 21st, yay. I hope to see you back here soon and i hope you enjoyed your well deserved break here.
Sarah
oh you should be a comedian/drummer or a comedian while playin the drums you are really funny.Dont know if you remember this but next time we will try to get the squeky chair fixed. Thanks again
Sarah
guten tag benny i saw you play in napier n.z last nite and was blown away , i am a drum teacher myself and you were an inspiration to me. i hope to see you again . i reallly wanted to buy your dvd but was unable to afford it . i am a metal and funk drummer but use promark 7a,s. wierd i know but love the feel of them, keep up the good, i mean Amazing work you are doing benny and i looooooove your style of playing , and Grebfruit kicks ass man . MUSIC IS THE LANGUAGE OF THE SOUL. AND DRUMMING IS THE RHYTHM OF LIFE. awesome Benny , much respect, And thank you soo much for your time to show us your chops. Peace
Hey Benny,
That grepfruit song just sticks in your mind, can’t stop singing it. Great music!
Do you intend to release some play alongs for the album? That would be much appreciated :)
Cheers!
Also alles in allem ein super System.
Got the DVD finally :o) – can I compliment more than anything the video word on the DVD – it was beautifully shot, really good to see such an effort put into that aspect as it adds so much. Loved also the way you kept in the splash flying off in Grebfruit and didnt do another take! Some nice ideas as usually I will take the bits i feel are most useful and work on them – ps are sonor releasing one of those kitchen drum kits……..
Hi Benny, Great Great playing! “Your” system is something i worked on 10 years ago, i got it from my teacher and its great, at the time we worked hand to hand sticking(singels with accents) and played footostinatos over it, like samba for example.
All the best!
Rob
Hallo Benny,
Vielleicht spielt Ihr ja mal in Hamburg.
Beste Grüße
Regina
really wanted to go to bed now, but have to write down some words:
1. Ordered my copy two month ago…
2. Got it today!
3. Brought my daughter to bed, my (almost) wife sleeping beside me on the couch
4. put the candle on and the dvd into the player
5. Watched all 2 ones to the end the whole night…
What to say…? It´s a real masterpiece. Once again you thrill me away. You´re my key to go on. Thanks a lot man!
I´m really in love with your approach and style. It´ll be a very special gig for me tomorrow night. Look forward to see you again this year and maybe trink some frankonian wine with you and share some ideas.
All the best deep from my heart!
Yours, RLRRLRLL (and the other way around if you can?!)
Jochen Weigand
hey benny !
Benny!
You’re DVD is great. Very original and creative. Congrats man! …and you’re drums really sound AWESOME! SONOR really doesn’t fuck around. They mean business! Very good production.
Visuell sehr sehr ansprechend verpackt!
Daumen hoch und weiter so. Vielleicht sieht man sich ja in Marburg beim Stoppok Konzert.
Grüße
Juan
Benny I hope you read this. your a huge inspiration, your DVD is awesome and your groove is unmatched. I’d like to have that relaxed comfort on the kit someday. I own numerous drumming DVD’s and have to say the sound quality of your Sonor’s and Meinl’s is incredible, (I’m sure it’s also your technique that helps) so thank the engineers for me. I own all Meinl’s and have become jellous of the extra dry sounds. thanks again for the inspiration and happy drumming. “chid”, chid, chid”.
Respekt deine DVD ist einfach nur geil! ;-)
Leben, leben will!

Also alles in allem ein super System.

March 16th, 2009 at 9:15 pmGot the DVD finally :o) – can I compliment more than anything the video word on the DVD – it was beautifully shot, really good to see such an effort put into that aspect as it adds so much. Loved also the way you kept in the splash flying off in Grebfruit and didnt do another take! Some nice ideas as usually I will take the bits i feel are most useful and work on them – ps are sonor releasing one of those kitchen drum kits……..
March 16th, 2009 at 1:43 amEvenin’ sir,
well i dont really have much to say except WOW, great work on the DVD and Your other projects :D
Im a ‘newbie’ drummer compared to the stuff you play Ha! Anyways i was just wondering if you could give me a few tips, I’d appreciate anything =]
Many Thanks, Ben.
P.S. You should do some clinics here in the U.K.! Lol
March 15th, 2009 at 3:44 pmHi Benny, Great Great playing! “Your” system is something i worked on 10 years ago, i got it from my teacher and its great, at the time we worked hand to hand sticking(singels with accents) and played footostinatos over it, like samba for example.
March 15th, 2009 at 7:44 amAll the best!

Hey Benny,
really wanted to go to bed now, but have to write down some words:

March 11th, 2009 at 12:45 pmHi Benny,
Visuell sehr sehr ansprechend verpackt!
March 10th, 2009 at 5:23 pmHey Benny,
Respekt deine DVD ist einfach nur geil! ;-)
Leben, leben will!
Grüße,
